THE STORY ABOUT THIS PAINTING
There is something enchanting about seeing the west coast for the first time. From the perspective of someone who came to Vancouver Island in my early 20’s, I’m not sure I had ever feasted my eyes on so many colours of green all at once. As I stood amongst the giants, I was spellbound to the forest in a fresh new way. Witnessing the beauty of Cathedral Grove’s lush old growth is a majestic endeavour. The dappled light. The moss coated branches. The smell of the rainforest. A carpet of ferns. The calls of the birds. The eerie feeling that you are not alone. The feeling that this place is special. This place is protected. This place is wild. This place is a masterpiece unto itself.
Featuring a glittering temperate rainforest with giant 800 year old trees dripping with moss, the trees here are amongst the oldest, tallest and wisest in Canada.
This painting is an ode to one of the most magical forests I’ve explored. Growing up in Ontario, the west was always a mystery to me. The jewel tones in this painting infuse this piece with a feeling akin to beginner’s luck. These colours capture my imagination, my innocence, my pioneering soul and my excitement of stepping into this magical forest for the first time. The brushwork is playful, loose and unconcerned with value shifts in realism. The rendition is fully surrendered to both memory and delight.
May we always protect the wisdom of these trees. And may we always have the courage to find these moments in life that feel like beginner’s luck.
In gratefulness and expansion, Ashley
