“To look, to see, to understand, to capture – however imperfectly – is to be part of the land in a way like no other.”

SPRING session 2020
APPLE BLOSSOMS IN EN PLEIN AIR + STUDIO
Welcome to our OIL PAINTING classes where we will learn starting techniques such as colour and value to create depth in painting. This series is designed to help student’s develop a language both in painting and in conversation about painting through practice and through demonstration. Individuality is the theme of this winter’s sessions as students will bring in their own photography or printed image to draw inspiration from.
Together we will deepen our understanding of the subtle balance between rendering our compositions and letting them form without over-working our paintings. Why? Because every painting teaches us when it is time to put down the brushes. In this series, we will learn what it means to tune into our own areas of interest with respect to subject matter and step into the opportunities and challenges of brining those images to life through painting.
This series invites a well rounded colour pallet which will allow these young painters to fully embrace both negative and positive space, depth and colour theory.
These classes are perfect for students who love to paint and are both open and excited about cultivating their own painting practice.
KEY LEARNINGS:
proportional composition in underpainting
achieving form through value
colour theory + understanding a well versed colour pallet
development of painting language and articulation
confidence through painting practice (we honour all the things that show up)
reflections through gentle critiques
mindfulness and curiosity of timing
Students supply their own painting materials. Painting substrates (two per session) rags, and easels and passionate instruction is supplied by The Imagination Studio. See our Material List.
en plein air
[ ahn ple ner ]
in the open air.
In this session, we will, in part, explore the magic of En Plein Air painting! En Plein Air is a French term that describes the experience of painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. The siracha to pho here lies in the light. In nature, it is always changing and feels ephemeral. The vastness of space presents freedom and the outdoor visual feast of the orchards will offer us challenges and opportunities to carve our way through the lanscape in painting. The elements of sun, wind and the bounties of nature are all a part of this experience. Comfort is a subjective experience.
In this session we will enjoy two en Plein air classes. Parents are required to arrange rides to a local orchard. Location TBD. The dates of En Plein Air classes will be decided based on weather conditions. Some flexibility is required in this session.
It is essential that students come fully prepared with all of their materials each class.
